Softball Shuts Out Rhode Island, Falls to UMBC

Catonsville, Md. - The Drexel softball team defeated Rhode Island, 4-0, in game one of the Dawg Pound Invitational but then fell to hosts UMBC, 3-0. Shelby Taylor allowed only three hits in her first complete-game shutout of the year against Rhode Island and went 2-for-3 on the game at the plate.

Vanessa Lightfoot also had a strong offensive game one, earning four hits in five at-bats. She singled through the left side in the top of the first to start things off for the Dragons. After advancing to second on a walk, Lightfoot stole third and then was driven in on a Taylor single.

The Dragons struck again in the second, as Lightfoot brought Kim Chan home on a single to center field. In the top of the third Drexel added two more as Liana Newton singled down the right field line to drive in Taylor and later Lightfoot brought in her second RBI of the day with another single. Taylor was able to hold the Rams scoreless through the remaining four and a half innings to earn her first shutout of the season.

The second game of the day remained scoreless into the third, when UMBC put together a walk and two singles to drive home the first run of the game. The Retrievers added two more in the bottom of the fourth to earn a 3-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.

Tara Konopka threw six innings and allowed five hits in the losing effort. Today's results move the Dragons to 5-10 overall on the season.

Drexel returns to action tomorrow as they continue competition in the Dawg Pound Invitational against Hampton at 3:45 p.m.
