Softball Concludes 3-1 Weekend with 8-0 Win Over Niagara

Catonsville, Md. - The Drexel softball team finished out a 3-1 weekend at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational with an 8-0 victory over Niagara on Sunday morning. Leticia Matsuoka and Shelby Taylor drove in two runs each as the Dragons completed a five inning shutout.

The Dragons came out swinging in the top of the second, putting seven runs on the board early. Baeley Reed led off with a single to right field and then stole second base. She advanced to third on a Karli Boyer ground-out and then scored as Kim Chan singled to the pitcher. Maggy Fermo followed with a single through the left side to advance the runners to second and third. Liana Newton then came to the plate and drove in a run with an infield single. Matsuoka doubled to left field to bring in two and make it a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, Taylor knocked a double into right center to score two more. The Dragons finished out their high scoring inning with another single from Reed to bring Taylor home, making the Drexel advantage 7-0.

The Dragons would add one more in the top of the fifth and then continued to hold Niagara scoreless through the bottom of the inning to earn the victory.

The Dragons will begin their home schedule and conference play next Saturday as they host UNCW for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. The Dragons will face the Seahawks on Sunday for a single game as well.
