PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team took one of two games from the UNCW Seahawks on Saturday afternoon as they opened their home schedule and conference play. The Dragons defeated the Seahawks, 5-4, in the first game of the day as Leticia Matsuoka went 3-for-3 and drove in an RBI, but then were defeated 3-1 in game two.
Drexel struck first in game one, as Baeley Reed singled home Matsuoka. The Seahawks retaliated in the top of the second as Nella Chamblee homered in the first at-bat. The Dragons went ahead again in the bottom third as Matsuoka double to left field and then advanced to third on an error by UNCW's first baseman. She then was brought home as Karli Boyer singled to right field.
The Dragons added another run the following inning off a Matsuoka single. UNCW earned one back in the top of the fifth as Merritt Wilkinson legged out a bunt for a hit and brought home Lauren Moore from third to edge the Drexel lead to 3-2. This didn't last long, as the Dragons put two more on the board in the bottom of the inning as Comfort Ahonkhai picked up a pinch-hit triple and Maddison Timoteo followed with a pinch-hit, two-run homerun to make it a 5-2 game.
The Seahawks picked up two more in the top of the sixth to make it a one-point game again, but the Dragons held them off to pick up their first home win of the season.
In the second game of the day, Reed earned two hits in three at-bats and starting pitcher Tara Konopka threw seven strike-outs in 6.2 innings, but it was not enough to overcome the Seahawks.
UNCW put up two runs early and then added another in the top of the sixth as it held the Dragons scoreless into the seventh inning. The Dragons had multiple chances late in the game, leaving two on base as they concluded the sixth inning. The squad tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh as they scored a run off a Matsuoka double, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
The Dragons and Seahawks return to action tomorrow when they will play their final game of the series at Drexel Field starting at 11:00 a.m.
