Softball Outlasts Iona, 9-8 at Lady Pirate Classic

Hampton, Va. - The Drexel softball team secured a 9-8 victory after eight innings over Iona on Saturday afternoon in the Lady Pirate Classic hosted by Hampton University. Junior Leticia Matsuoka went 3-for-3 and scored three runs in the winning effort.
The Dragons got on the board early as Matsuoka drove in Baeley Reed to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Drexel added another in the bottom of the second when Reed brought Ellen Scott home with a single down the rightfield line. In the third, the Dragons had still held Iona scoreless and then added another two runs off singles from both Shelby Taylor and Vanessa Lightfoot with runners in scoring position.
Iona got on the board in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs to make it a 4-2 game. Drexel retaliated with back-to-back doubles from Matsuoka and Taylor to take a three run lead. Iona fought back yet again to make it a 5-3 game in the top of the fifth, but Drexel added another run in the bottom of the inning as Sylvia Llamas scored on a wild pitch.
The Gaels staged a comeback in the top of the sixth, putting up five runs to take an 8-6 lead. The Dragons rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Taylor hit a 2-RBI double to send the game to extra innings. The Dragons held Iona scoreless in the top of the eighth and went into the bottom half of the inning still tied at 8-8. Then with a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Llamas, followed by back to back singles from Lightfoot and Liana Newton, the Dragons were able to drive in Karli Boyer for the game-winning run.
Tara Konopka threw five innings, earned four strikeouts and allowed only three runs. Rose Portiolli and Taylor also pitched in the extra inning game.
The Dragons return to action tomorrow when they will face St. Bonaventure at 11:00 a.m., followed by tournament-host Hampton at 3:00 p.m.
