PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to come back as they were defeated by Georgetown, 7-3. Shelby Taylor threw seven strike-outs in the losing effort.
The game remained scoreless into the third when Georgetown scored three runs on a bases-clearing double by Samantha Giovanniello. The Hoyas struck again in the sixth, as Georgetown's Ali Gargicevich-Almeida singled down the left field line to drive in two more runs and make it a 5-0 Hoyas' advantage.
Drexel had a chance to strike back in the bottom of the sixth, as Vanessa Lightfoot drew a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, Karli Boyer was awarded first after being hit by a pitch. Although Lightfoot was out as Liana Newton grounded into a fielder's choice, the Dragons still had runners on second and third with two outs. The runners then advanced as the Hoyas' catcher let another ball get passed her. However, the Dragons were unable to capitalize on the situation as Georgetown pitcher Megan Hyson picked up a strike-out to end the inning.
The top of the seventh started out strong for the Dragons, as relief pitcher Taylor Lee forced back-to-back grounders to pick up two quick outs. However, Georgetown's Hyson came to the plate next and doubled down the left field line. This was followed by a two-run shot over the center field fence from Giovanniello to make it a 7-0 Hoyas' lead.
Despite being down seven runs, the Dragons put up a fight in the bottom of the seventh. Lightfoot knocked in a run with a single to the third baseman and Taylor followed with a single through the left side to add another run for the Dragons. Boyer came to the plate next and drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Drexel picked up their third run as Newton was hit by a pitch which forced Lightfoot to cross the plate. Despite the effort, the Hoyas were able to force a pop up to end the game and secure their 19th victory of the season.
The Dragons return to action this weekend, as they host the conference-leading James Madison Dukes for a series at Drexel Field. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., while game three's first pitch on Sunday is set for 12:00 p.m.
