PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team fell to James Madison, 5-4, in game three of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. The game, which included five home runs between the two teams, changed hands five times.

James Madison struck first as the first batter to the plate, Niki Prince, sent a ball deep to left field and over the fence. In the bottom of the inning, Vanessa Lightfoot reached base on a single to right field. Shelby Taylor came up next and hit the left field fair pole with a two-run bomb to give the Dragons the lead.

The Dukes retaliated in the second as catcher Erica Field singled with the bases load to drive in two runs and gain a 3-2 advantage. James Madison would maintain this lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Taylor came to the plate with two outs and hit her second home run of the game to tie the Dukes, 3-3. Karli Boyer followed with another solo shot over the fence in left center to take back the lead for the Dragons, 4-3.

In the top of the sixth, however, James Madison's Cat Clavin pinch-hit and sent a two-run shot over the center field fence to ultimately cement the victory for the Dukes. The Dragons had opportunities as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, but they were not able to come up with anything. James Madison held onto the 5-4 advantage through the seventh to earn the win and take the weekend series, 2-1.

Taylor had four strike outs in the complete game against the Dukes, while Boyer earned two put-outs in the losing effort. The loss moves the Dragons to 15-17 overall and 3-6 in conference while the Dukes improve to 31-13, 9-3 CAA.

The Dragons return to action on Tuesday as they will host the neighboring La Salle Explorers for a single game at Drexel Field starting at 3:30 p.m.
