Dover, Del. - The Drexel softball team fell to Delaware State in both games of Thursday's doubleheader. The Dragons lost by a 7-2 deficit in the first game of the day and then fell to the Hornets, 8-0 after five innings in game two.
Delaware State got on the board early in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of first. The Dragons retaliated two innings later as they put up two runs in the top of the third. Ellen Scott led off with a double to left field and moved over to second as Lara Horwitz laid down a sacrifice bunt. Leticia Matsuoka drew a walk with two outs and then was able to cross the plate behind Scott when Kimberly Chan reached on an error, making it a 3-2 game.
The Hornets added another run in the bottom of the fourth and then increased their lead to 5-2 with another run in the fifth. Delaware State cemented their victory by putting up a two spot in the sixth to create a 7-2 margin that the Dragons would be unable to overcome.
Delaware State scored first in the second game of the day, as well, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Two innings later, the Hornets increased their lead to 4-0, scoring a run on an error and then another on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the fourth, Delaware State added three more runs to take a 7-0 lead. The Dragons challenged in the top of the fifth, but left two runners on base to end the inning. The Hornets added the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth off a single to left field to put the run rule in place and pick up an 8-0 victory, their second of the day.
The loss moves the Dragons to 17-21 overall on the season, while the Hornets improve to 26-15.
Drexel Softball returns to action this weekend as they travel to South Carolina to face College of Charleston in a three-game conference series. The two teams will be participating in a "Strike Out Cancer" fundraiser during Saturday's doubleheader to benefit brain cancer research. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and then 1:00 p.m. for Sunday's finale.
