CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Drexel softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to start its series at the College of Charleston on Saturday. The Dragons lost the front end of the doubleheader 5-1 despite not allowing an earned run, then fell 4-1 in the second game. The trip was the first to the College of Charleston since the Cougars joined the Colonial Athletic Association.
The first game saw Drexel senior starting pitcher Shelby Taylor hurt by her defense, which allowed five unearned runs including two in the third and three more in the fifth. With the host Cougars up 5-0, Drexel got a run back when Karli Boyer singled home Leticia Matsuoka in the seventh inning, but the Dragons left runners on second and third in the seventh as Charleston maintained its edge and won the series opener. The Dragons managed just two hits, both in the seventh inning, but Taylor scattered five hits and struck out three without allowing an earned run.
In the nightcap, Drexel was set down in order through the first three innings before Matsuoka, leading off the fourth, slammed her second home run of the season to left field. Baeley Reed followed with a single, but was stranded at third as the inning ended three batters later.
That would be all the Dragons could muster despite two hits in the sixth inning. The Cougars, meanwhile, answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth including an unearned run, adding single runs in the fifth and sixth to shore up the victory. Rose Portiolli took the loss for the Dragons, striking out two but allowing the three earned runs that proved the difference.
Drexel and the College of Charleston will return to action on Sunday to complete their three-game series. That game is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
