Softball Drops Series Finale at College of Charleston, 5-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Drexel softball team was swept for the first time in Colonial Athletic Association play this season, dropping a third game at the College of Charleston on Sunday, 5-1. Shelby Taylor took the loss for the Dragons, scattering seven hits over six innings and striking out two. The Dragons managed just 10 hits over the weekend, scoring single runs in all three games.

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but Taylor settled down from there and induced a ground ball to first base to end a bases-loaded threat. Charleston loaded the bases again in the second, but this time the senior pitcher got a strike out to leave the bags loaded before the Cougars could add to their lead.

Drexel evened things up in the fourth inning when Karli Boyer led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. She went to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a ground out by Kim Chan. After a comebacker produced the second out of the inning, the Dragons pushed Boyer across when Maddison Timoteo singled up the middle.

Charleston got the lead back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, then tacked on three more insurance runs in the sixth. The Dragons had their best scoring threat in the sixth, getting runners to second and third with one out after Taylor singled and Chan doubled, but the Cougars got a line out and a fly out to end the threat. The Dragons also had a runner in scoring position with one out in the seventh after Ellen Scott and Leticia Matsuoka drew walks, but they could do nothing with it as the Cougars got a pop up and a fly to left to end the game.

Drexel will be right back in action on Tuesday when it visits Saint Joseph's for a single game at 3:30 p.m. The Dragons will also take on another city foe on Wednesday, visiting Temple for a doubleheader against the Owls at 2:30 p.m.
