Softball Falls to Hofstra, 8-0 in First Game of Weekend Series

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Drexel softball team fell to Hofstra, 8-0 after six innings in game one of this weekend's series. Shelby Taylor threw four strike outs over four innings of work in the losing effort.
Hofstra got started early with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Pride's Becca Bigler hit a 2-RBI single down the left field line to give Hofstra a 2-0 lead.
The Dragons held the Pride scoreless in the second, but then Hofstra struck again in the third as Kim Smith doubled to left center to drive in two runs. The Pride scored again as Caryn Bailey singled through the right side to bring Smith across the plate and gain a 5-0 advantage. Another Hofstra single from Michaela Transue gave the pride their fourth run of the inning before Drexel earned its third out by forcing a groundout to shortstop Baeley Reed.
The Dragons broke their hitless streak in the top of the fourth as Liana Newton singled to the shortstop. However, Drexel was unable to capitalize on the hit and headed into the bottom of the inning still scoreless.
The Pride increased their lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Transue led off with a solo homerun to increase the Hofstra lead to 7-0. The game-winning run was scored six batters later as Ashley Ainbinder hit a single back to the pitcher, putting the run-rule into effect and giving the Pride the victory.
The loss moves the Dragons to 17-25 overall and 4-12 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Pride improve to 30-11 and 9-4 in conference.
The Dragons and Pride will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader that is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. Hofstra will provide live stats and audio for both games. Also be sure to follow @DrexelSoftball and @DrexelDragons on Twitter for updates.
