BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - Needing a win in the regular season finale to extend its season, the Drexel women's lacrosse team ran into trouble offensively as the Dragons fell to Hofstra on Saturday at Vidas Field, 10-2. Drexel came up short in its bid to earn a fourth-straight Colonial Athletic Association Championships berth, with Hofstra earning the league's No. 4 seed with the victory.
Seniors Kelly Palace and Amanda Norcini were honored before the game with a Senior Day ceremony. The duo hooked up on the Dragons' first goal, early in the second half, with Norcini feeding Palace to cut Hofstra's lead at the time to 5-1. Lizzy Carr would add another goal for Drexel that made it a three-goal game, but Hofstra responded with five straight to close out play and seal the victory.
Despite splitting the six draw controls in the first half, an improvement over recent outings, the Dragons were unable to get off many good looks at the net in the first half. Drexel was outdone in shots 11-6 at halftime. All six of the Dragons' shots were on goal, but Hofstra's Kelsey Gregerson came up with saves on all six shots. Hofstra, meanwhile, sent eight of its shot in net in the first half, with Teresha Bradley stopping three. The Pride built a 5-0 lead heading into halftime, the first time the Dragons had been shut out in a half all season.
After the break, Drexel controlled possession and appeared to score in the first five minutes of the half, but a free position goal was disallowed due to a crease violation. The Dragons managed to get on the board with 24:49 to play when the senior duo hooked up for a goal as Amanda Norcini fed Kelly Palace in front of the net.
Despite the elongated scoring drought to start the game, the Dragons were still in the game thanks to their strong defense and Bradley's solid play in net. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Lizzy Carr made it a three-goal game with her assertive drive and shot to the upper left corner, cutting the Hofstra lead to 5-2 with 17:20 to play.
Drexel could get no closer, as Hofstra's Alexandra Mezzanotte scored unassisted with 15:06 to play to start a 5-0 Pride run that ended the game. The Dragons' loss was their first in CAA play at home, and just their third at Vidas Field this season.
