Delaware Takes First Two Games Against Softball

Newark, Del. - The Drexel softball team fell to Delaware in two games on the first day of the weekend series. The Blue Hens defeated the Dragons, 2-0 in game one and then won by the same margin in the second game of the day.

The Dragons had chances early in game one, leaving three runners on base in the second after Maddison Timoteo walked, Kim Chan singled, and Liana Newton reached base on a walk with only one out. The Blue Hens were able to close out the inning without letting a run cross the plate.

In the bottom of the third, Delaware picked up its first run on a ground-out RBI from Sarah Bencivenga. The Blue Hens would score again in the bottom of the sixth as they hit a double and a triple back-to-back to take a 2-0 lead. The Dragons tried to rally in the seventh as they had two runners on and no outs, but they were unable to get on the board.

The second game of the day was another pitchers' duel as the game remained scoreless into the fourth inning. Delaware's Carolyn Szymanski got things started with a single up the middle and then was moved over to second a sacrifice bunt. She was able to move over to third base on a ground out to the short stop in the next at bat, and then was brought home on a single by Delaware's Heather Oakley. The Blue Hens added another run the following inning as Bencivenga hit another RBI single. Trailing Delaware 2-0 yet again, the Dragons were unable to overcome the deficit in the remaining two innings.

With the losses, Drexel moves to 12-14 overall and 1-3 in conference competition. The two teams return to action tomorrow for the final game of the weekend series which is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
