Swimming and Diving Cleans Up on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams sent their 10 seniors off with a win in their last home meet as Dragons. The men wrap-up a perfect home season with the win over Georgetown, 191-109. The women conclude the season with a 2-2 home mark after the 160-140 win over the Hoyas.
Across both teams the Dragons recorded 20 wins. The Dragons also finished 1-2-3 in seven of those wins.
Drexel got off to a fast start by winning both of the men's and women's 200y medley relays. The women's team of Katie Duggan, Rachel Bernhardt, Emily Lau and Brianna Bentz were five seconds clear of second place. In the men's race, the Dragons went 1-2 with just under a second seperating the two teams.
Aubrey Murray broke her own pool record in the 200y freestyle with a 1:53.11 en route to the win. The sophomore was 4.5 seconds clear of Christine Ryan of Georgetown in second. Sara Golshahr finished in third for the Dragons with a 1:58.11, which is a season-best. Murray also took the win in the 100y freestyle with a 53.82. Duggan, who was swimming for the last time at the Drexel Pool, won the 100y backstroke with a 58.14, which is her fastest time at home this year.
Drexel swept the men's 100y backstroke with Kyle Lukens taking the win, JT Lumpkin finishing second and John Quagliariello, another senior, in third. Lukens had a second lead on the field at the first split and cruised from there. Lukens also won the 400IM by almost five seconds.
Berhardt, Jessica Gidzinski and Emily Charniga finished 1-2-3 in the women's 100y breaststroke. Bernhardt had three seconds on the field after the first split and swam to a 4.7-second win. The Dragons also swept the men's 100y breaststoke. Chad Schmidt took the win with teammates Brian Woo and Andrew Reimon, another senior, finishing second and third respectively. In the women's 200y breaststroke it was the same three swimmers but a different order. Bernhardt won again (2:24.64) but this time it was Charniga in second and Gidzinski in third. The men went 1-2 in the 200y breastroke. It was Schmidt and Reimon doing the honors.
Drexel women outscored Georgetown 32-6 in the women's breaststroke events, which was key in getting the win.
The Dragon men also swept the 50y freestyle. Joel Berryman took the win with a 21.11. Lukens was right behind him in second and Mike Shaeffer was just a tenth behind Lukens in third. Berryman also led a Dragon-sweep in the 100y freestyle. The New Zealander was followed by Sean Swartz and Alex Chialastri, who was swimming for the last time at home.
Lumpkin won the 200y backstroke. The freshman was two tenths ahead of teammate Liam McLaughlin. Quagliariello was third to make it another sweep for Drexel. Mike Krohn won the 100y butterfly with a time of 50.98, which just under a second faster than runner-up Michael Vanin of Georgetown.
Madison Kramer won both of the women's diving competitions. Kramer was just under 45 points clear of second place in the 3m and 15 clear of second in the 1m. The two wins makes it five of a possible six for the junior at home this season. For the men Simond Carne was fourth in the 3m and third in the 1m and David Sanchez was fifth in the 1m.
The afternoon ended the same way it was started with the Dragons winning both of the 400y freestyle relays. Murray, Duggan, Bentz and Bernhardt got the win for the women. Berryman, senior Mike Shaeffer, Chialastri and Krohn got the win on the men's side.
Drexel is back in action next weekend when they travel to Lehigh for meet with the Mountainhawks at 10 a.m.
