UNCW's Second Half Burst Stops Men's Soccer, 3-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Colin McGlynn netted his team-leading third goal of the season and Xavier Bou Hernandez tallied his first collegiate point on the assist, but it was not enough as the Drexel men's soccer team fell at UNCW on Saturday night, 3-1. The Seahawks scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half to break a scoreless halftime draw.
Drexel (2-10-1) fell for the fourth straight game, while UNCW (7-2-2) ended a two-game winless stretch with the victory. Colin Bonner netted the game-winner for the Seahawks in the 55th minute on a rainy night in North Carolina.
The two teams were scoreless in the first half, though the Seahawks peppered Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach throughout the opening 45 minutes. Afflerbach came up with six saves on the night, all of which were before halftime. The Dragons would add a team save when a defender cleared the ball off the line in the second half.
It took 4:31 for the Seahawks to strike in the second half. Earning a free kick from 25 yards out, Ben Fisher curled it past the Drexel defense and Afflerbach, finding the back of the net for the first score of the game. UNCW would add a second goal, the eventual winner, when Bonner collected a loose ball in the box and scored from close range in the 55th minute. Brayden Smith scored on a header off a corner kick in the 77th minute to put the Seahawks up 3-0.
Drexel got on the scoreboard with its first goal of the night – its first in three games – when McGlynn scored in the 81st minute. Hernandez sent the ball into the box, where McGlynn collected it and poked it past UNCW goalkeeper Sean Melvin from close range. Already the only Dragon with multiple goals this season, McGlynn now has three on the season to go along with an assist for a team-high seven points.
The Dragons will be back in search of their second Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season on Wednesday night when they make the short trip down I-95 to Delaware. That game is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m.
