Women's Soccer Downs Towson, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated Towson in their first home conference match-up of the season on Friday evening, 3-1. Sophomore Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausboll was responsible for two of Drexel's goals in the winning effort, while rookie Vanessa Kara added her eighth of the season which marked the Dragons' third goal of the night.
Towson took an early lead after a free kick from Emily Marshall deflected off a Drexel defender and went into the goal in the ninth minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. The Dragons would retaliate eight minutes later off a free kick of their own which Civanni Moss served into the box to Hauch-Fausboll who headed it into the neto even the score. As the Dragons and Tigers cleared the field for halftime, the score remained tied at 1-1.
In the second half, Hauch-Fausboll struck again in the 66th minute as she found another ball from Moss and sunk it past the Towson keeper to give Drexel its first lead of the game. Then in the 86th minute, Kara would cement a Dragons' victory as she broke past the Towson defense, pulled the keeper out of the net and then tapped the ball past her to give Drexel a 3-1 lead. The goal puts the rookie within two goals of tying Drexel's all-time record for the most goals in a single season (10).
The Dragons outshot the Tigers on the game, 17-4. Kelsie Fye got the start in goal and recorded her first win of the year. The senior keeper recorded one save on the night, while Towson's Taylor Sebolao totaled eight stops.
With the victory, Drexel improves to 7-5, 1-2 CAA while the Tigers move to 6-4-2 and 0-2 in conference play.
Prior to the game, senior Jacki Sieder was honored as the recipient of the Laura Meikle Koch Coaches' Award and La Foundation Scholarship. The award is named in memory of the former Drexel standout who passed away in 2008 at the age of 28 after losing her courageous battle with cancer. Meikle Koch's parents, Cam and Sandy, presented Sieder with the award.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday when they host James Madison at Vidas Field starting at 2 p.m.
