PHILADELPHIA - Drexel Wrestling placed six wrestlers at the 2015 Keystone Classic on Sunday. David Pearce earned a second place finish at 133 pounds, while No. 16 Matthew Cimato and Stephen Loiseau finished third at 149 and 184 respectively. Austin Rose, Nezar Haddad, and Joey Goodhart rounded out the placewinners for the Dragons, all finishing in fifth place on the tournament.
Pearce started off the day with a 7-1 decision over Indiana's Alonzo Shepherd. A major decision over Harvard's Ryan Friedman would then send him to the quarterfinals, where he edged Eastern Michigan's Ben Caladrino by a 4-3 margin. In the semifinals, Pearce defeated Caleb Richardson of Penn in the first tie breaker to advance to the finals. There he fell to Dom Forys of Pittsburgh by a 9-6 deficit, but finished the tournament in second place at 133.
Cimato started the tournament out strong with a major decision over Eastern Michigan's Ben Griffin at 149. An 8-3 decision over Robert Lee of Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals helped him advance to the semis, but he was defeated there by Penn's Charles Cobb, 7-6. In the consolation rounds Cimato picked up another major decision over VMI's Emmitt Kelly to earn a shot in the third place match, which he ultimately won in strong fashion with a pin over VMI's Stevan Smith.
Loiseau earned a third place finish in the 184-pound weight class despite getting sent to the consolation rounds by Rider's Michale Fagg-Daves in just his second match of the day. The sophomore moved through the wrestlebacks with a major decision over Pittsburgh's Zach Bruce and decisions against Eastern Michigan's Derek Hillman and Penn's Ryan Wosick to advance to the consolation finals. There he faced Fagg-Daves yet again and this time picked up a 4-2 decision to finish in third place on the competition.
Rose started the day with a major decision over Penn's Joseph Velliquette and then followed with a 10-4 victory over VMI's Shabaka Johns to advance to the semifinals. Appalachian State's Forrest Przybysz edged him out of advancing to the final round with a 3-1 decision and then Rose fell to Eastern Michigan's Dakota Juarez in sudden victory in the consolation semis. However, the redshirt sophomore was able to overcome VMI's Johns yet again to secure a fifth place finish at 165.
Haddad went 4-2 on the day on his way to a fifth place finish in the 197 bracket. The redshirt freshman won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals, where he would face Pittsburgh's Nick Bonaccorsi. Bonaccorsi sent Haddad to the consolations with a win by fall, but Haddad would go on to win his next two matches to advance to the consolation semis. There he fell to Penn's Frank Mattiace for his second loss of the day, but a forfeit in the fifth place match would allow Haddad to join his teammates as a top-5 placewinner.
Goodhart went 4-2 on the day, making it to the quarterfinals before he was defeated by Harvard's Nick Gajdzik in the first tie breaker. He then earned a decision over Penn's Tyler Hall and picked up a sudden victory win against the Quakers' Patrik Garren to advance to the consolation semis. He was edged there by Rider's Mauro Correnti, but then picked up another overtime win over Frankliln & Marshall's Antonio Pelusi to secure a fifth place finish.
Zack Fuentes, Anthony Canfora, Ryan O'Connor, Mike Comunale, Nick Elmer, and Alex Foley also competed for Drexel.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday, Nov. 29 when they will head to New York City to compete in the fourth-annual Grapple at the Garden. Drexel will face Northwestern and Illinois in dual meets that are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and noon respectively.
