PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell at home for the first time this season as they were defeated by No. 11 Penn State, 10-3. Senior goalkeeper Teresha Bradley had 14 saves, matching a career high. Milan White scored twice for the Dragons, but they could not get the offense going overall as they fell to a ranked opponent for the third time this season.
Drexel played a strong defensive effort, holding Penn State to its lowest goal output of the season. The Dragons nearly limited their third ranked opponent of the season to single digits before the Nittany Lions scored with 3:39 remaining to make it a 10-3 contest. Jocelyn Quaile caused three turnovers as the Dragons pressed Penn State into 15 giveaways overall.
Penn State staked itself to a 3-0 lead over the first nine minutes of the contest before White got the Dragons on the board. She brought the ball upfield on the right side, then cut into the middle near the top of the arc and fired from straight on to net her ninth goal of the season.
The Nittany Lions would have an answer. Penn State won eight of the nine draw controls in the first half – and 12 of 15 on the afternoon – and was able to control possession, even as the Lions found themselves stymied by Bradley and the Drexel defense. It took nearly six minutes after White's goal, but the Nittany Lions finally broke through again with Tatum Coffey's first of two goals with 14:24 to play in the first half. Madison Cyr, who scored a game-high three goals, followed with her first of the day 2:32 later.
Lacey Aghazarian made it a 5-2 game when she netted her 12 th goal of the season with 9:38 to play in the first half. Aghazarian shot from 15 yards out just to the left of the net, a low shot that skipped past Penn State goalkeeper Emi Smith and into the corner of the cage. Smith faced just three shots on net from the Dragons in the first half, but stopped only one of them.
Penn State made a goalie change at halftime, inserting McKenna Coyle. That move seemed to pay off as the Dragons stepped up the pressure offensively but could not solve Coyle. Drexel had nine shots in the second half, more than double its first-half total. Five of those went on net, but only one – White's second goal of the afternoon with 25:39 to play to make it 7-3 – found paydirt. Coyle made four saves over the game's closing minutes as the Dragons were held scoreless for that last 25:39 as Penn State pulled away for the victory.
Though the offense was unable to get the Dragons back into the game, Bradley kept the team within striking distance most of the way with her 14 saves. Several of those were point-blank stops, including three saves on free position attempts. All of those came after halftime.
The Dragons will return to action on Wednesday evening when they host La Salle. That game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
