Men’s Swimming and Diving Defeats Howard, NJIT on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's swimming and diving team defeated both Howard and NJIT on Saturday afternoon from the Drexel Pool in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons earned a 186-71 decision over Howard and a 159-123 victory against NJIT.
The men started off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Led by J.T. Lumpkin, Harrison Schultz, Patrick Cobb and Liam Kelly, the men took first with a time of 1:36.52. The group of Alberto Lagrutta Saenz, Ralph Cannarozzi III, Sean Swartz and Luke Hanner finished second at 1:36.86.
Cannarozzi had a big day, winning two more individual events in the 50 and 100 breast with times of 27.12 and 59.76. Schultz finished second in both events with respective times of 27.67 and 1:00.25.
Kyle Lukens won both the 50 back and 50 free. Lukens touched the wall of the back at 23.63 and the free at 21.22 for the victories.
Alberto Lagrutta Saenz earned his first individual win in the 100 back with a time of 53.62.
Hanner won the 500 free with a time of 4:46.68; he also finished second in the 100 fly at 53.02. Ryan DeMott swam a lifetime best 54.04 in the 100 fly as well.
Patrick Cobb took first in the 1000 free at 9:53.97 as Ivo Pejovic grabbed second with a time of 9:54.54.
Bell finished second in the 200 free (1:44.69) and third in the 100 back (54.91).
Brown came in second in the 500 free (4:47.36) and third in the 50 breast (28.35).
In the 100 free, Pejovic finished second (48.5) and Matthew Klotz came in third (48.55).
After securing the meet, the men raced exhibition in the 50 fly, 100 IM and 200 free relay. Lukens would have had his third individual win on the day in the 50 fly as he finished with the fastest time at 22.39. The group of Bell, Pejovic, Lumpkin and Lukens then finished with the top time in the 200 free relay to close out the meet at 1:26.85.
The Drexel men and women will return to the pool next weekend against Georgetown on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C. before returning home on Saturday, Jan. 30 for senior and alumni day on Homecoming Weekend against Lehigh.
