ELON, N.C. - The Drexel women's soccer team ended Friday's matchup with Elon in a scoreless draw after two overtimes. Both teams had their chances in the overtime periods, but neither was able to break the tie and come away with the victory.
The Dragons and Phoenix were pretty evenly matched in the first half, with each team getting off four shots apiece. In the second period, Elon came out strong and maintained control for a large portion of the half, but the Drexel defense was able to hold them off.
Towards the end of regulation, the Dragons took over control and had a few strong opportunities. With less than 15 minutes to play, Vanessa Kara broke into the box and passed the ball through a defender's legs to advance forward and get off a shot that went high. Three minutes later, the sophomore made another attempt but it went wide. Then with less than eight minutes to go Laura Hamilton and Shae McCarty each got off a strong shot that Elon keeper Katelyn Fowler was able to pull down.
With no change in score as time wound down in regulation, the two squads headed into the first overtime period. Drexel was able to get off three shots to Elon's zero in the first extra period, but to no avail. Then in the second overtime the Dragons had two chances, while the Phoenix had one. Again the clock wound down to zero with no score change and the Dragons and Phoenix would each walk away with a draw and one point towards the conference standings.
The Dragons outshot the Phoenix, 16-15. Elon had 11 corner kick opportunities to Drexel's seven. Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded three saves on the outing, while Elon's Fowler tallied nine.
With the tie, the Dragons move to 8-5-3 overall and 4-1-2 in conference action. Elon moves to 7-7-2, 2-3-1 CAA.
Drexel will return to action on Sunday as it travels to William & Mary for its final road game of the season. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
