PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (7-9, 2-2 CAA) grabbed a crucial conference victory over the Hofstra Pride (9-7, 1-3 CAA) on Friday evening from Buckley Field in the squad's final regular-season home game of the year.
Before the contest, Drexel honored its two graduating seniors, Jessica McCarthy and Idrienne Walker, as part of Senior Night. Those two seniors for Drexel had a key role in the Dragons' first half, each scoring a goal. The two also came together on another play in the second half to secure the win.
Hofstra scored first 11:19 into the conference affair when Stella Schoen took a quick turnaround shot from the left side of the circle to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage.
Drexel responded when Walker recovered a blocked shot inside the circle before putting it in at close range less than two minutes later, 1-1. It came as her 10th goal of the season and the 20th of her career. She is the second Dragon to reach 10 goals this season after sophomore Megan Wiest did so last week.
The two teams each exchanged another set of goals when Hofstra's Claudia Marin Samper snapped one off right in from of the cage after receiving a pass from Madison Sauve with about 21 minutes left in the opening half.
With 10 minutes left in the first, the Dragons put together a corner opportunity to even the score before halftime. Walker inserted to sophomore Katie Bagdon at the top of the circle before McCarthy buried a shot at the back of the cage, 2-2.
To open the second left, junior Alison McCardell gave the Dragons the lead with 32:16 left in regulation. Her initial shot looked to be stopped by the Hofstra goalkeeper but the ball dribbled through before crossing the goal line, 3-2. It came as her third goal of the year.
Walker gave the Dragons a fourth scoring opportunity with about 22 minutes left in the contest. Walker took the ball up the field before getting tripped inside the circle by Hofstra's Savanna Malloy. Walker earned a penalty stroke on the play while Malloy got a yellow card. McCarthy took the stroke for Drexel and converted it to give the Dragons a two-goal advantage, 4-2.
Hofstra took one back after the Pride scored on a penalty corner to make it 4-3 in favor of Drexel. Schoen scored the goal, her second of the night, with assists to Colby Hussong and Marin Samper.
Strong defensive play for the final 15 minutes led the Dragons to the CAA win. The Pride put in Marloes Schavemaker in at kicking back with 4:36 to play. Drexel stopped the offensive effort by the Pride late in the game.
Hofstra led shots, 10-9, and penalty corners, 5-2.
Drexel now preps for the final regular-season weekend with a pair of road games. The Dragons first head to Towson in Towson, Md. on Friday, October 28 at 6 p.m. before squaring off with No. 8 Delaware in Newark, Del. on Sunday, October 30 at noon.
