PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team (3-1) scored seven goals in the second half to push past the Colgate Raiders (1-2) by a final of 11-7 from Vidas Field in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sunday.
The Dragons were led by sophomore Nadia Pelham-Lacey who notched four goals and two assists for a six-point effort in the afternoon affair. Junior Devin Nihill followed her up with three goals.
Pelham-Lacey got the Dragons on the board early as she scored the first of the game 18 seconds in, 1-0. After Colgate tied it back up minutes later, the sophomore recorded her second of the day before Nihill added her first on an assist by junior Caroline Thiele, 3-1.
Midway through the first half, the Raiders got one back when Charlotte Redican got one past to trim the Drexel lead down to one.
Sophomore Alex Beilman extended the advantage back to two when she scored her third of the season with 11:16 remaining in the half. After another Colgate goal a minute later, the Dragons went into halftime with a 4-3 lead.
Pelham-Lacey and the Dragons came out with offensive pressure in the second half with a 3-0 run as the Maplewood, New Jersey native scored two quick goals to put the Dragons up 6-3. Seconds after Pelham-Lacey's fourth goal, senior Emily Duffey scored her ninth of the year as the lead was now 7-3.
The Raiders responded with three unanswered goals of their own off the sticks of Natalie Washuta, Lauren Gorajek on a penalty-advantage opportunity and then Isabel Kreitler over a period of roughly three minutes (22:25-19:37). Drexel's lead was now back to one, 7-6.
But yet again, just like the beginning of the half, the Dragons strung together three more unanswered goals, two from Nihill and one from junior Lacey Aghazarian, to put the game out of reach, 10-6. Nihill scored at 15:24 and 10:20 as Aghazarian put another in at 6:39 as Drexel controlled the ball and pace of play for a large portion of the second half.
Colgate's Taylor Fischer got the Raiders within three with six minutes left before Aghazarian scored her second of the afternoon in the final minutes, 11-7.
Junior Carlee Ries (W, 3-1) made four saves, facing a total of 15 shots in her third win of the season.
Colgate won the draw control battle, 11-9.
Drexel committed just 8 turnovers across 60 minutes compared to the Raiders' 12.
Senior Madeline DiBrino, senior Alyssa Kalitz, senior Summer O'Donnell, Pelham-Lacey and Thiele each caused a Raider turnover in the victory.
Duffey and Pelham-Lacey are tied for the team lead with nine goals each.
Drexel's next game will be against Monmouth on Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m. from Vidas Field.
