VESTAL, N.Y. – The Drexel men's lacrosse team (3-5) fell Binghamton (2-4), 10-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Vestal, N.Y. A total of six Dragons scored a goal in the loss. Freshman Matthew Varian led the squad with two goals. Junior Cole Shafer notched his team-leading 16th of the season while sophomore Jacob O'Donnell recorded both a goal and an assist.
Drexel opened up a 2-1 lead in the early going. Joe Rainoldi got the Dragons on the board and after a Binghamton goal, Mason Pynn scored with four minutes left in the first to give the Dragons the lead. That wouldn't last long as Matthew Kaser scored on the man-up and with just 24 seconds to play in the first, Ben Kocis gave the Bearcasts the lead.
Drexel would answer in the opening moments of the second quarter when Shafer scored an unassisted goal. However, Binghamton responded as Johnny Maher set up Matt Kaser twice in the span of 1:24 to give the Bearcats the lead for good. The Dragons cut the lead to one on two occasions but could not get any closer the rest of the way.
Binghamton led 7-6 heading into the final quarter. The Bearcats extended the lead to two on a Thomas McAndrew goal and then made it a three-goal game when McAndrew set up Laim Reaume on the man-up. After a Joe Lacata goal, Varian scored late to make the final 10-7 as Drexel's two-game winning streak came to an end.
The Bearcats dominated face-offs and possession in the contest. Binghamton won 12 of 13 face-offs in the first half and 17 of 21 in the game. That led to a 44-31 shot advantage for the home team. Jimmy Joe Granito made 11 saves for Drexel, while Tanner Cosens had 11 for the Bearcats.
The Dragons now return home for their final nonconference game of the season on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. against Mercer at Vidas Field.
