PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team split its doubleheader with Lafayette on Wednesday afternoon as it opened its home schedule at Drexel Field. The Leopards edged the Dragons in game one, 3-1 but then Drexel came back to win in walk off fashion in the second game as they defeated Lafayette, 9-1 in five innings. Paula Ueno hit a double to center field in the bottom of the fifth that allowed Erin Okoniewski to score from first, putting the mercy rule into effect in Drexel's favor.
Lafayette got on the board first in game one as Ally Brown singled through the left side in the top of the first and brought Jenna Orlando around to score. The Dragons, however, would even the score in the bottom of the inning as Kristi Uyesaka hit an RBI single that brought Reed around to score from second.
In the top of the third, the Leopards would extend their lead as Brown hit a two-run home run over the fence in left field. In the five remaining innings, the Dragons were unable to retaliate and thus fell to Lafayette by a score of 3-1.
The second game of the day remained scoreless into the fourth, but then a big inning for the Dragons would ultimately solidify the win. Drexel scored eight runs on six hits and one error. Sharon Zamora, Taylor M. Lee, Baeley Reed, Okoniewski, Ueno, Uyesaka, and Kuroda were all credited with RBIs in the inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Leopards kept themselves alive and avoided the mercy rule as Morgan Biddle hit a triple and then was knocked in as Sam Sweigart put the ball in play in the infield to make it an 8-1 game. Drexel would add another in the bottom of the fifth though as Okoniewski drew a walk and then scored from first on a walk-off double to center field from Ueno.
Tara Konopka earned her sixth win of the season. She threw five strikeouts on the outing and only allowed three hits and one earned run.
The Dragons move to 15-15 overall, while the Leopards go to 7-17 on the season. Drexel will return to action this weekend as they will visit Delaware for a conference series beginning on Saturday at noon.
