PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team (5-2) fell to UMBC (4-2) by a final of 9-7 on Wednesday evening at Vidas Field. Lauren Gerrie led the Dragons with three goals, while Lacey Aghazarian added two of her own in the losing effort.
The Dragons took an early 6-2 lead on the Retrievers, as four different goal scorers got on the board for Drexel. Lacey Aghazarian got things started less than three minutes into the game, followed by a goal scored by Nadia Pelham-Lacey. After UMBC got one back, Aghazarian fed Gerrie for the first of her three goals. Devin Nihill followed, making it 4-1 with 19:27 to play in the first half.
UMBC scored next, but Drexel answered right back. Again it was Aghazarian finding Gerrie for a score at the 17:09 mark for Drexel's fifth goal, less than two minutes before Aghazarian scored her own second goal of the day to make it a 6-2 contest.
Down by four, UMBC responded. The Retrievers scored four straight over a span of just more than 12 minutes. Drexel took the lead back when Pelham-Lacey assisted Gerrie's third goal just before the half, but UMBC knotted things back up early in the second half and held the Dragons off the scoreboard for the final 30 minutes as Drexel saw its three-game winning streak snapped.
The loss ended a stretch of five home games in seven contests to start the Dragons' 2016 season. Drexel will now play six straight on the road before returning home on Apr. 17. That road trip begins on Mar. 23 when Drexel heads across the country to take on Fresno State in California at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
