PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team fell to University City neighbor Penn, 4-2 in a midweek matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Savanna Johnson went 3-for-3 from the plate for the Dragons in the losing effort.
The Quakers struck first as they got on the board with two runs in the second inning. Penn would go on to hold its 2-0 advantage until the top of the fifth, when Drexel came back with a two-out rally. With runners on first and second, Paula Ueno sent a single into center that brought Jenelle Ladrido around to score from second. Kai Uyesaka followed with a base hit just out of reach of the shortstop that brought Johnson across the plate to tie the game at 2-2.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, however, Jurie Joyner sent a single up the middle that brought two runs across the plate for the Quakers. The Dragons were able to get out of the inning though as they picked off a runner during the next at bat to halt Penn with a 4-2 lead.
The Quakers shut Drexel down on pop ups in the top of the next inning, but then the Dragons' defense forced two ground outs and Konopka got Sydney Kranzmann to strike out swinging to end the sixth.
Despite a lead-off single from Johnson in the top of the seventh, the Dragons were unable to overcome the deficit the Quakers had created.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 16-22 overall, while the Quakers improve to 14-16 on the year. Drexel will return to action this weekend when it hosts the CAA-leading No. 7 James Madison for a conference series at the Vidas Athletic Complex.
