PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team dropped two games to No. 7 James Madison on Saturday afternoon. Paula Ueno went a combined 3-for-6 on the day for the Dragons in the losing efforts.
The Dragons held the Dukes close through the majority of both games, losing by a 3-0 deficit in the first game and then holding James Madison to just a one-run advantage through six innings in game two. Drexel let the game get away in the top of the seventh, however, and ultimately fell by a score of 8-0 in the second game of the day.
The Dukes got on the board early in game one, as Jailyn Ford singled in the top of the first to drive Morgan Tolle in from third. With runners on second and third and one out, the Dragons' defense prevented further damage by getting the lead runner out at the plate on a fielder's choice. Katie Haley got Drexel out of the inning as she forced Niki Prince to ground out to shortstop and halted the Dukes with just a 1-0 advantage.
Prince came back to haunt the Dragons in the top of the third as the James Madison shortstop singled through the left side with runners on first and second to bring in an additional run. The Dukes would add their third run in the top of the fourth, as catcher Taylor M. Lee chose to pick off the runner stealing second for the second out of the inning. Lee connected with Gabriela Kuroda to catch Tolle attempting to steal second, but Madyson Moran was able to cross the plate on the throw.
Despite attempts to retaliate in the remaining four innings, the Dragons were not able to overcome the deficit the Dukes had created in the first game of the day and went on to fall by a score of 3-0.
In game two, James Madison would score an unearned run in the top of the second. The Dukes had runners on first and third with one out when pinch runner Kassie Brammer stole second. Catcher Kimberly Chan attempted to pick Brammer off, but the ball was overthrown which allowed Prince to score from third.
The Dukes would hold onto their 1-0 lead through six innings. In the seventh, the Dragons defense struggled to get an out early and would allow seven more runs to cross the plate before the inning was over. This allowed James Madison to walk away with an 8-0 win for its second victory of the day.
With the losses, the Dragons move to 16-24 overall and 0-10 in conference action while the nationally ranked Dukes improve to an impressive 36-3, 11-0 CAA.
Drexel and James Madison will return to action tomorrow as they close out the weekend series with a single game beginning at 11 a.m. at Drexel Field.
