Softball Splits Doubleheader with Wagner

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader with Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at the Vidas Athletic Complex. The Dragons earned a 7-4 victory in the first game of the day, but then fell to the Seahawks in the second game, 3-1.
Drexel got on the board early in game one with two runs scored on an error by the shortstop. The Dragons would hold this 2-0 advantage through three complete innings before the Seahawks would tie the game in the top of the fourth off a two-run home run from Hana Gilbert.
The game would not stayed tied for long, as the Dragons came out fighting in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor M. Lee led off with a single to left field and then Savanna Johnson added a single up the middle. As Kimberly Chan singled up the middle, pinch runner Lara Horwitz was able to come across the plate from second base.
Leading by one run in the fifth, the Dragons would secure their advantage by adding another four runs to the board. With one out, Paula Ueno hit a triple with runners on second and third to drive in two runs and then Lee followed with a two-run shot over the fence in left field, the fourth homer of her rookie season.
The Seahawks were able to get two runs back off of three hits in the top of the seventh, but the Drexel defense was able to hold them off to earn a 7-4 victory in the first game.
Game two remained scoreless into the fourth inning. The Seahawks were first to strike this time, as Erica Krumbine hit an infield single with two runners on that would allow a run to cross the plate. Two innings later, a solo home run from Maddie Marable gave Wagner a 2-0 advantage after six.
In the top of the seventh, the Seahawks extended their lead to 3-0 as Karen Prihoda singled in an additional run for Wagner. The Dragons were able to get a run back in the bottom of the seventh off an RBI single from Chan, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit that Wagner had created.
After Tuesday's competition, Drexel moves to 20-32 overall while the Seahawks go to 20-25 on the year.
The Dragons will travel to College of Charleston to close out the 2016 season with their final CAA series this weekend. The Dragons and Cougars will face off first in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and then again on Saturday with a single game scheduled for 11 a.m.
