CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Drexel softball team dropped two games to College of Charleston on Friday afternoon to start the weekend series. The Dragons were edged by the Cougars, 1-0 in game one and then fell by a 10-1 deficit in five innings in the second game of the day.
College of Charleston got on the board early in game one, scoring the lone run of the game in the first inning. Taylor DuPree drew a lead-off walk and then stole second. She was moved over to third on a ground out to second base and then would score on another ground out to the right side.
The Cougars would hold the Dragons to just three hits on the game, preventing them from getting anything going in the remaining six innings. While College of Charleston only recorded two hits of its own on the outing, the early run scored was enough to get past Drexel with a 1-0 victory in the first game of the day.
In game two, College of Charleston jumped out to a one run lead again in first. Two innings later, the Cougars would add two more runs off of three hits, including a lead-off double from DuPree. In the fourth inning, Charleston would cement its lead by scoring seven runs. Two RBI doubles, a sacrifice fly, and a three-run home run from Dana Horgan gave the Cougars a 10-0 advantage.
The Dragons were able to get a run back in the fifth as Savanna Johnson led off with a singleup the middle. Alexis Lyttle came up next as a pinch hitter and singled to left field to move Johnson to second. Then Kai Uyesaka reached first on a fielder's choice that got Lyttle out at second but moved Johnson over to third. A sacrifice fly from Gabriela Kuroda brought Johnson across the plate, giving the Dragons their first run of the day. It was not enough however, as the Cougars were able to keep Drexel from rallying and would finish with a final score of 10-1 after five innings.
The Dragons and Cougars return to action tomorrow as they will close out the series and the 2016 regular season with a single game that is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
