Women’s Lacrosse Concludes Season with Loss to JMU at CAA Championships
5/6/2016 3:23:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The number-four seeded Drexel women's lacrosse team (10-7) fell to the number-one seeded James Madison Dukes (10-9) by a final of 12-3 on a rainy afternoon in a CAA Championship semifinals matchup. The game was played at Vidas Field as Drexel hosts the conference tournament.
Play developed slowly in the opening 30 minutes as the score was just 3-1 at half with the Dukes maintaining the slight edge.
JMU scored the first three goals off the sticks of Brooks Lawler, Betsy Angel and CAA Player of the Year Jaci Gordon.
Devin Nihill got the Dragons on the board with 1:50 remaining in the opening half as she was assisted by Emily Duffey.
The Dukes came out strong in the second half, scoring an additional nine goals for the win.
JMU scored three goals in the opening 3:15 for a 6-1 lead. The sixth goal, which came from Betsy Angel, was on a man-up opportunity.
Roughly two minutes later, Nihill trimmed the lead back down to four as she scored on a pass from Duffey once again, but that would be the Dragons' smallest deficit for the remainder of the contest.
Starting with a goal from JMU's Gordon at 23:02, the Dukes went on a 6-0 run across the next 18:47 to take a 12-2 advantage.
Nihill scored her third and the team's third with about a minute remaining as Drexel fell by a 12-3 final.
The loss concludes the Dragons' season.
James Madison outshot the Dragons, 28-9, with a 20-6 edge in shots on goal.
The rain contributed to a number of turnovers in the game as the teams combined for 26 in 60 minutes.
Both Drexel and James Madison converted 11-of-14 clear attempts.
On seven free-position attempts, Drexel held JMU, one of the top free-position teams in the country, to just one goal.
Drexel goalie Carlee Ries and a trio of defenders, Summer O'Donnell, Alyssa Kalitz and Madeline DiBrino, each picked up two groundballs in the loss. Kalitz also caused a team-high two turnovers.
