PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team missed an opportunity to earn valuable points in the Colonial Athletic Association race when the Dragons fell to Hofstra at home on Wednesday night, 3-1. Drexel scored for the first time since Sept. 30, but could not get its first victory since that day as Hofstra pulled out to an early 2-0 lead and had an answer as the Dragons tried to respond.
Laolu Daranijo scored his first collegiate goal for the Dragons, a score that made it 2-1 at the time early in the second half. Jacob Jordan had seven saves in goal, but Drexel could not keep up as Hofstra put together its highest scoring total of the season.
Hofstra pushed tempo early and saw it pay off in the 20th minute. Danny Elliott brought the ball upfield to the left of the box. After heading deep towards the end line, Elliott sent a cross back along the ground that wedged through players from both teams crowding in the box. As it reached the right side, it found the foot of Jon Fraser, who roped a missile to the far post. It hit the post, but the carom continued in for his first goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, the Pride scored again. This time, the Dragons had a chance to gain control in their own but a misplayed header left the ball off for Luke Brown, who also sent a cross from left to right where it connected with a sprinting Oscar Ramsay. His rocket from 10 yards out made it a two-goal game.
Early in the second half, the Dragons had one of their best chances of the night to that point when Eden Ben Hemo, making his first appearance of the season, got his head on a ball in the box. It went to the far post and beat Hofstra goalkeeper Alex Ashton, but ticked off the post and away from the goal mouth.
In the 54th minute, the Dragons' luck began to change. Ashton charged far out of his position to challenge a loose ball on the edge of the Hofstra box, but could not beat Laolu Daranijo to the ball. Afterr gaining control near the left corner, Daranijo straightened himself out and gave himself a chance to put the ball on net. A bounding shot trickled over the goal line before any Hofstra defenders or Ashton could get back to poke it away.
The Pride scored a third time seven minutes later when a ball was deflected into the box and Ramsay collected it for a straight-on rocket.
Drexel will attempt to regroup and get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when it hosts the College of Charleston for its final CAA home game of the year. That contest kicks off at 4 p.m.
