PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team dropped a conference matchup to the College of Charleston Cougars in overtime Saturday evening at Vidas Field, 2-1. The Dragons fall to 2-9-1 (1-4-1 CAA), while the Cougars improve to 6-5-2 (3-1-2 CAA) on the year.
After Charleston scored the first goal on a penalty kick just 25 seconds into the match, the Dragons were able to tie it up with just under 14 minutes remaining in regulation. In overtime, though, Charleston took possession and connected on a cross just 27 seconds into the extra session for the victory. Drexel goalkeeper Jacob Jordan tied his season high with 10 saves on the evening.
Charleston benefited from an early Drexel foul in the box to give the Cougars a chance on a penalty kick 25 seconds into the match. Senior forward Leland Archer put home the penalty kick to give the Cougars the early advantage. The Cougars continued to control the pace after the goal, but the Dragons' defense settled in the second part of the first half. Drexel freshman forward Laolu Dananijo provided a boost of energy off the bench in the middle of the first half for head coach Doug Hess, and got the Dragons' best look of the first. Charleston goalkeeper Kevin Shields was there, though, to make his first of two stops to preserve a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, both teams had early corner kick opportunities on which they could not convert. Drexel had a chance to tie it early in the 74th minute of play after an illegal touch by Charleston's Shields in the box gave the Dragons a free kick just inside the box on the left side, but Mathias Ebbesen's shot went wide. Ebbesen got his revenge in the 77th minute, taking a pass from Erik Alexandersson and dribbling just left of center. On the run, Ebbesen blasted a ball from the top of the box into the upper right-hand corner for his second goal of the season. With the score tied, each side would have a corner kick opportunity, but the match would head to overtime tied, 2-2.
The overtime period, however, would prove to be short-lived. Following Drexel tapping the ball into play, a long pass ended up in Charleston's possession. Ben Tansley sent a long pass across the field to the Cougars' senior midfielder Eli Dent, who found himself with open space along the right sideline and sophomore midfielder Tucker Heffron making a run down the middle. As Dent sent a cross into the box, Heffron went up with a Drexel defender and just got a piece on the header – the ball may have also gotten a slight piece of the Drexel defender after Heffron – sending the ball low just inside the left post for the game-winner. The goal came 27 seconds into the extra period to end the game 2-1.
Charleston outshot the Dragons 20-9 overall, including 12-3 in shots on goal. Charleston had four corner kick chances to Drexel's two.
The Dragons return to action Tuesday night in a late-season nonconference battle with Lehigh at 7 p.m. at Vidas Field.
