PHILADELPHIA – Playing its penultimate home match of the 2017 season, the Drexel men's soccer team came up empty against Lehigh on Tuesday night, 3-0. The Dragons showed signs of life on the offensive end after halftime, but they had already found themselves in a 2-0 hole by then and ultimately could not find the back of the net.
Lehigh got on the board in the 29th minute after controlling possession for much of the first half. Blaise Milanek fed a long pass into Alex Green across midfield. Greene deked a defender, dribbling upfield towards the box, then stopped 25 yards out and rocketed a shot over the outstretched reach of Jacob Jordan to the left post.
Just before halftime, the Mountain Hawks struck again. This time, Tatsu Otani sent a high arching shot into the box just in front of the net. There, it connected with Lehigh's leading scorer Mark Forrest, who got his head on it and flicked it back across the goal mouth for the score, his 11th of the season.
Down 2-0 at the break, the Dragons came out of the locker room with a spark. Erik Alexandersson, who rested for the first half, had a pair of excellent looks at the net up close off corners. Both times, his headers were just barely tipped away by Lehigh keeper Will Smith. Mathias Ebbesen also had a good look early in the second half, but the Dragons once again came up empty.
After being outshot 12-3 in the first half, Drexel finished with a 10-7 edge in shots in the second. In fact, the Dragons put seven shots on goal compared to just six for the Mountain Hawks. Alexandersson finished with three shots, all on goal, while Ebbesen put two of his three attempts on net. Laolu Daranijo also had three shots, one of which tested Smith. However, Lehigh was able to add an insurance goal that sealed the game away in the 84th minute, a Doyle Tuvesson score off a Drexel turnover deep in its own zone.
The Dragons will resume Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday when they head south to take on Elon in a must-win game for the Dragons as they look to keep their postseason hopes alive. That game kicks off at 7 p.m.
