HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Drexel women's soccer team was outlasted by James Madison on Thursday night as the Dukes took a 2-1 victory over the Dragons in overtime. Madison Dunn scored her fourth goal of the season in the losing effort.
The Dragons and Dukes took a scoreless game to halftime, but both teams came out fighting after the play resumed in the second half. The Dragons were first to strike as Dunn put away a corner kick from Emma Heckenberg with a header in the 70th minute to give Drexel a 1-0 advantage with 20 minutes to play.
Drexel held off the Dukes' advances until the 81st minute, when Haley Crawford evened the score for James Madison. The Dukes' Ginger Deel fired a shot from 12 yards out that was saved by a diving Christiana Ogunsami, but Crawford found the rebound and put it back into the top of the net.
Despite a shift of momentum in favor of James Madison, the Drexel defense was able to hold off the Dukes in the remaining nine minutes to force overtime. Just over five minutes into extra time, however, James Madison's Brittany Borum took a long shot that slipped through Ogunsami's hands over her head and gave the Dukes the advantage and the win.
James Madison outshot Drexel, 15-8 in its winning effort. Ogunsami recorded seven saves for the Dragons on the outing, while James Madison's Hannah McShea tallied five of her own.
The loss puts a halt to Drexel's four-game winning streak and moves the Dragons to 10-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 against conference opponents. James Madison improves to 9-8, 4-4 CAA. The Dragons currently stand in second place in the CAA with one game left to play.
The Dragons will finish out the regular season on the road as they visit Elon on Sunday in a game that is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
