FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Drexel softball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast in its final game of the Battle at the Beach, 4-3 on Sunday morning. The Dragons took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, but gave up a two-run home run a half-inning later that gave the Eagles back the advantage.
The game remained scoreless into the fourth inning. Florida Gulf Coast was the first to strike as it got on the board with a two-out double from Bri Innamorato that drove in two runs.
The Eagles maintained this lead until the top of the sixth when the Dragons took control of the scoreboard. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kai Uyesaka hit an infield single to the shortstop that brought Taylor Kent across the plate. Jourdan Skirha put the ball in play in the next at bat and was safe at first on a double error by the Eagles' first baseman that allowed two more runs to score. The Dragons would finish the half-inning leading the Eagles, 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth the Eagles retaliated, however, with a two-run home run from Bree Tourtillott that put them ahead again, 4-3. Jenelle Ladrido got the Dragons' rally started in the top of the seventh with a lead-off triple, but she was called out at the plate on the next play after Taylor Kent put the ball in play to the right side. The Dragons were unable to stage a comeback and ultimately fell to the hosting Eagles, 4-3.
The Dragons and Eagles had four hits apiece in the outing. Florida Gulf Coast's Taylor Wade picked up her seventh win of the season, while Katie Haley was credited with the loss for the Dragons.
With the loss the Dragons move to 4-7 on the year, while the Eagles improve to 17-13 overall.
The Dragons will return to action next weekend when they will open conference play on the road against UNCW. The Dragons and Seahawks will first square off in a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. and then will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at noon.
