WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Drexel softball team dropped two games to UNCW as they opened conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons were shutout by the Seahawks in game one, 3-0 before going on to fall to them again, 6-1 in the second game of the day.
The Seahawks got on the board early in the first game, as Merritt Wilkinson scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. The UNCW offense added two more runs in the third as Wilkinson scored again and then Lauren Moore crossed the plate on an RBI single from Nella Chamblee. The Seahawks' Peyton Jordan tallied six strikeouts against the Dragons on her way to throwing the fourth no-hitter in UNCW program history and the first since 2012.
In game two UNCW was first to strike again, this time scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. The Dragons got one back a half inning later as Linda Rush and Kai Uyesaka hit back-to-back doubles, which allowed Rush to cross the plate for Drexel. With the Dragons trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Seahawks tacked on two additional runs to extend their lead to 6-1. The Dragons were unable to retaliate in the remaining two innings and the Seahawks went on to secure their second win of the day.
With the losses the Dragons move to 4-9 overall, while UNCW improves to 20-6-1 on the season.
The Dragons and Seahawks will return to action tomorrow as they close out the weekend series with a game that is set to begin at noon.
