3/4/2017 2:51:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Robert Frazee and Cole Shafer each scored three goals, but Marist defeated Drexel, 11-7, to hand the Dragons their fourth-straight loss to open the season. The Dragons fought back from a four-goal deficit in the second half to make it a one-goal game late in the third quarter, but could not get any closer. Marist is now 4-1 after the win.
The Dragons got on the board first when Reid Bowering fed Frazee just 31 seconds into the action. They made it a 2-0 game a minute later when Frazee added an assist on Shafer's first of the afternoon.
The Red Foxes responded with three straight goals and managed to hold Drexel off the scoreboard for nearly 20 minutes of game time before an unassisted score by Shafer tied things back up with 7:31 remaining before halftime. Brian Corrigan, Marist's goalkeeper, was instrumental in shutting down the Dragons, coming up with 15 saves on the afternoon.
Shafer's goal proved to be the only one the Dragons would score over a period of 32:27 spanning the first to the third quarters. Meanwhile, Marist pumped in four straight after Shafer's game-tying goal, taking a 7-3 lead early in the third. Gannon Morrison had four goals and an assist for the Red Foxes, while J.D. Recor scored twice with three assists.
Trailing 7-3, Drexel clawed its way back into the game. Bowering started the comeback, scoring with 10:51 to play in the third quarter, his fifth goal of the season. Chris McLallen fed Shafer at the 6:06 mark of the third to make it a 7-5 game, and Jacob O'Donnell found Frazee three minutes later to get Drexel back within one. Chris Schlappich would provide Marist with a two-goal cushion heading into the fourth quarter, though, which proved critical when Frazee finished off his hat trick just 1:25 into the fourth.
That would prove to be the final push for Drexel, which saw Marist answer less than two minutes later. The Red Foxes would score twice more in the final minutes to seal away the victory.
Drexel will return to Vidas Field on Friday when the Dragons host Bryant. That game will face off at 5:00 p.m.
