FINAL BRACKETS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Heavyweight Joey Goodhart led the Dragons as he secured a second place finish at the 113th EIWA Championships. He and teammate Alex DeCiantis, who finished sixth at 184, earned automatic bids to this year's NCAA Championships in St. Louis.
Matthew Cimato added a fourth place finish at 149, while Tanner Shoap and Kevin Devoy Jr. also finished in sixth place at 125 and 133 respectively. Austin Rose rounded out the Dragon placewinners with a seventh place finish at 165.
Cimato and Devoy each became three-time conference placewinners, while Shoap, Goodhart, and Rose each secured a spot on the EIWA podium for the second time in their career. DeCiantis became both a first time placewinner and a first time NCAA qualifier after a strong performance at this year's conference tournament. Goodhart qualified for the national tournament for the second time in his career.
No.1 Goodhart began competition at the tournament on Friday with a 6-4 win over Army's Trevor Smith at heavyweight. He then took a 4-0 victory from No. 8 Ian Butterbodt of Brown to advance to Saturday's semifinals. He opened day two with a 3-2 win over Princeton's Ray O'Donnell which bought him a ticket to the finals. In the championship match, Goodhart was tied with Columbia's No. 3 Garrett Ryan at the end of the second period but Ryan would go on to secure two takedowns in the final period and walk away with the heavyweight title. Goodhart took the second spot in his weight class, returning to the podium for the second year in a row.
No. 3 Cimato started the tournament with a second period pin against Brown's Travis Vasquez at 149 on Friday. He went on to earn an 11-1 major decision over Navy's Corey Wilding in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals on Saturday, he was defeated, 5-3 by No. 2 Jordan Laster of Princeton in sudden victory and moved into the consolation bracket. There he defeated American's No. 8 Michael Sprague to advance to the third place match, but in the final session he was edged in yet another bout that went to sudden victory by the top-seeded Laike Gardner of Lehigh. He finished the tournament in fourth place and narrowly missed an automatic bid to the national championships.
No. 5 DeCiantis started Friday's competition off by edging Harvard's Kanon Dean, 3-2 in his opening match at 184. In his next outing, however, No. 4 Samson Imonode of Army sent him to the wrestlebacks with a 6-3 decision. DeCiantis was able to pull out a 3-1 victory in his first bout of the wrestlebacks to advance to the second day of competition. In his first match on Saturday, he defeated No. 8 Joe Heyob of Penn to advance to the consolation semifinals where he fell by a 6-0 decision to No. 2 Steve Schneider of Binghamton. Then in the fifth place match, he lost a 3-1 decision to American's Jason Grimes in sudden victory to finish in sixth place. With the 184 weight class allocated seven spots to advance, DeCiantis secured a chance to compete in the NCAA tournament for the first time in his career.
No. 3 Devoy started off day one with a 4-2 win over Binghamton's Audey Ashkar in the 133 bracket that helped him advance to the quarterfinals. There he defeated No. 6 Austin Harry of Army West Point by a 4-0 decision. When competition resumed on Saturday, he took on No. 7 Jeffrey Ott of Harvard in the semifinals where he fell by injury default 39 seconds into the bout. He was forced to medically forfeit his next two matches but still managed to secure the sixth spot on the podium in the 133 pound weight class.
No. 3 Shoap started the tournament off strong in the 125 bracket with a win over Penn's Jeremy Schwartz. In his second match, however, he dropped a 7-4 decision to Army's No. 6 Trey Chalifoux which sent him to the consolation rounds. In his first wrestleback match-up he secured a 16-0 technical fall over Hofstra's Jacob Martin to stay alive and advance to the second day of competition. He started day two with a 4-0 win over Matteo DeVincenzo of Princeton to advance to the consolation semifinals, where he lost by fall to Cornell's No. 4 Noah Baughman. He went on to fall to Chalifoux again in the fifth place match and completed competition at the tournament with a sixth place finish.
No. 5 Rose took a win in his first match on Friday as he defeated Bucknell's Logan Kerin by a 12-2 major decision. In his next match-up he suffered a 7-5 loss to No. 4 Jon Viruet of Brown that sent him into the consolation rounds. An escape with just over a minute to go in his first bout of the wrestlebacks put him ahead of American's Cole Moseley, 3-2. He would go onto win by the same margin to advance to the consolation round of four. As competition began on Saturday Rose took on No. 8 Drew Daniels of Navy, where he was edged 2-1 in sudden victory. He moved onto the seventh place match, where he defeated No. 2 Cole Walter of Lehigh by a 3-2 decision. His seventh place finish put him on the podium in this spot for the second year in a row.
Willie Davis was eliminated from competition after tallying two losses on the first day of competition at 157. David Pearce (141), Ebed Jarrell (174), and Joshua Murphy (197) each lost their opening bout but made a comeback with a win each in the first round of wrestlebacks. However, their competition at the tournament was halted on day one after they each suffered a loss in their second consolation match.
