ELON, N.C. – The offense never got going for the Drexel women's lacrosse team on Friday night as the Dragons fell at Elon, 15-2. Drexel was held without a goal for the final 36:53 of the game as the Dragons saw a brief two-game win streak snapped.
Drexel (6-6, 1-1) got one goal apiece from its two leading scorers, Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Devin Nihill. Maggie Stetson won four draw controls as the Dragons actually outdid Elon in that category 12-7, but Drexel managed just get off just 17 shots, connecting on only two.
Elon scored the game's first goal, but the Dragons knotted things up quickly when Nadia Pelham-Lacey scored her 27th of the season just under 10 minutes into the action. However, the Dragons would have offensive troubles the rest of the first half despite winning six of the 12 draws contested in the first 30 minutes, including three draws from Maggie Stetson. Still, they managed just one goal to show for it – a Devin Nihill score with 6:53 remaining before intermission – while the Phoenix rattled off eight more for a 9-2 halftime edge.
The Dragons continued to fare well on draws in the second half, winning six of the seven in the period. However, Elon was able to keep Drexel off the scoreboard despite that possession. The Phoenix, meanwhile, tacked on six second-half goals to win the game going away. Stephanie Asher scored four times and had an assist to lead the way for the Phoenix.
Drexel will get right back to work on Sunday afternoon when the Dragons visit William & Mary for a critical game in the CAA standings. The Dragons and Tribe will get things started at noon.
