Women's Lacrosse Surges Past UC Davis, 12-8

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team ended a three-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon as the Dragons took control early and cruised to a 12-8 victory over UC Davis at Vidas Field. The Dragons scored seven straight to end the first half to erase an early two-goal deficit and build a lead they would never relinquish.
Devin Nihill scored four goals to lead the team, her second four-goal game of the year. With the performance, she assumed the team lead in goals scored this season with 23. Nihill also had three draw controls and a caused turnover in the victory. Lauren Gerrie had a pair of goals and three assists for her second five-point effort in three contests, a career best. Gerrie came up with a pair of draws as well. Nadia Pelham-Lacey scored twice and had an assist, and Courtney Dietzel did the same for her first-career multi-point effort. Dietzel also chipped in two draw controls. Caroline Cummings scored her second collegiate goal and Jamie Schneidereith netted her first, while Caroline Thiele dished out a pair of assists and Alex Beilman had one.
Carlee Ries was impressive in goal, stopping 11 of the 19 shots that came her way. It was her second-career game with double-figure saves, and two shy of her career high. Four players – Eva Winiarski, Molly Savage, Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Caroline Thiele – each recorded two caused turnovers.
The Dragons let the visiting Aggies score the game's first two goals, as UC Davis controlled possession early and scored twice in the first five minutes of play. When Drexel won a draw, though, Pelham-Lacey made it count, attacking the net from the left and scoring at the 24:26 mark. That goal sparked a 7-0 Drexel run that kept UC Davis off the scoreboard for just under 30 minutes of game time.
Nihill tied things up off a pass from Thiele with 19:41 to play in the first half, and Cummings gave the Dragons the lead five minutes later off a pass from Pelham-Lacey. Just 30 seconds later, it was Jamie Schneiderieth scoring the first goal of her collegiate career when Gerrie fed her from behind the net.
Courtney Dietzel recorded the first of her three points on the afternoon when she found Nihill for a goal with 10:14 remaining in the opening half. She then scored one herself 3:30 later, finishing a pass from Lauren Gerrie. With 2:42 to play before halftime, Gerrie capped the Dragons' 7-0 run with her 15th goal of the year on a feed from Alex Beilman.
UC Davis got back on the scoreboard in the second half, but was never able to get the deficit under four goals. Gerrie scored what would prove to be the game-winner with 19:07 remaining, and though the Aggies scored twice late to shrink Drexel's lead in the final minute, it was not enough to mount a comeback as the Dragons improved to 5-5 to close out non-conference play.
Drexel will wrap up a four-game homestand on Friday night when the Dragons open up their Colonial Athletic Association slate against Hofstra. That game is set to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
