RICHMOND, Va. – The Drexel field hockey team turned in a strong defensive performance in Friday's season opener but could not convert on its chances on the offensive end, falling to Virginia Commonwealth at Cary Street Field, 1-0. The Dragons open the season 0-1, while the Rams open at 1-0.
Drexel's defense proved to be a bright spot in the game, holding the Rams to one goal and keeping Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection Emily McNamara, who totaled 18 goals and nine assists a season ago, off the board despite leading the team with three shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist was brilliant in the cage for Drexel, turning away six shots. Following a penalty corner, however, VCU freshman midfielder Maite Sturm was able to sneak one past Gilchrist at the 16:09 mark of the first half for the first and only goal of the game.
The Rams' defense had a stellar afternoon, led by goalkeeper Chessa Kownurko. The senior stopped all five shots that came her way for her first career shutout. Drexel's offense created opportunities and worked for a couple of second-half penalty corners. Off both, though, Kownurko turned away shots from sophomore Tess Bernheimer, at the 49:47 mark and the 63:49 mark, respectively. Seconds after Bernheimer's latter shot, Tess Horan had a pentalty stroke chance, but Kownurko came up with a save to preserve a 1-0 VCU win.
Bernheimer led the Dragons with three shots on goal, while Horan and Chandler McFeeley had one apiece. The Rams had six corners, one of which led to their lone goal.
The Dragons will remain in Richmond for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Spiders beginning at noon.
