RICHMOND, Va. - The Drexel field hockey team earned its first win of the season Sunday afternoon at Richmond's Crenshaw Field, beating the Spiders, 2-1. Sophomore Tess Bernheimer scored, and junior Megan Wiest assisted on, both goals for the Dragons. Drexel improved to 1-1 on the early season, while Richmond fell to 0-2.
The Dragons were able to jumpstart their offense, earning early opportunities to put pressure on the Spiders' defense. Drexel had three penalty corner chances in the opening 10 minutes of play, and converted on the third as Bernheimer found the back of the cage off the feed from Wiest at the 9:30 mark. Richmond, however, would fight back for chances of its own in the first. The Spiders put three shots on goal in the final 25 minutes of the first half, but junior goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist stopped all three to preserve a 1-0 Drexel lead at halftime.
Richmond came out firing in the second half. The Spiders fired off four shots in the first four and a half minutes, the final of which, off the stick of freshman Florentine Beelaerts von Blokland, found its way past Gilchrist to even the score at 1-1. The Dragons would respond less than six minutes later at the 45:16 mark of the game as Wiest again found Bernheimer for the score to put the Blue and Gold back in the lead. Richmond mustered three scoring opportunities the rest of the way, but Gilchrist again came up big, turning them all away to finish the day with seven saves as the Dragons came away with the 2-1 victory.
Drexel earned the victory despite getting outshot, 16-8. The Dragons had five penalty corner opportunities to Richmond's three.
The Dragons will return to action next Sunday at Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
