Gilchrist's Career Day Spoiled, Field Hockey Falls Sunday to No. 22 American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist tied a career high with 14 saves Sunday afternoon, but the Drexel field hockey team could not overcome high-powered No. 22 American at Jacob Field, 4-1. The Dragons fall to 3-5 (0-0 CAA) on the year, while the Eagles improve to 6-2 (1-0 Patriot).
Gilchrist, a junior from Glasgow, Scotland, had previously set a career high with 14 saves last season on Sept. 4, 2016 at UConn. Her previous season-high in 2017 was 10 against Saint Joseph's. Despite Gilchrist's career day in goal, the Dragons found themselves in a 2-0 hole late in the second half before Tess Horan scored to halve the deficit. Horan's goal would be the only time Drexel could find the back of the cage. The goal for Horan was her fourth goal in five games, and it was her fifth consecutive game recording at least one point. American would tack on two more before time expired to come away with a 4-1 victory.
American opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half with an unassisted goal off the stick of Samantha McCormick. After the half, the Eagles struck again just over 10 minutes into the second when Rachel Stefano found Noor Coenen to make it a two-goal lead. With just under 13 minutes remaining, the Dragons struck back to cut the American lead in half. Tess Bernheimer found Horan for her fourth of the season. For Bernheimer, it was her second assist of the season, tying her for the team lead.
The Eagles would respond, however, and add two more goals before time expired. At 67:02, Coenen notched her second of the day and fifth of the year to extend the American lead. Then with just over a minute remaining, Rafaela Rubas found Megan Benson following the penalty corner to make it a 4-1 score, which would prove to be the final.
American fired off 27 shots, 18 of which found their way on goal, making for a busy day for Gilchrist. The Dragons recorded six shots, five of which were on goal, testing American keeper Maura Jacobs to make three saves. American recorded one defensive save by Annaka Groshinski. American had 13 penalty corner chances to Drexel's three.
The Dragons return to action on Friday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Monmouth before returning home Sunday at noon to host Bucknell at Buckley Field.
