WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The Drexel field hockey team fell Friday evening to a high-scoring No. 25 Monmouth team in West Long Branch, N.J. at So Sweet A Cat Field, 4-1. The Dragons are now 3-6 on the year, while the Hawks improved to 6-2 overall.
Drexel trailed by just one goal at halftime before Monmouth scored in the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman Isis Cornelissen scored her first career goal to halve the deficit, but Monmouth would put the game out of reach with two late goals to seal the win.
Monmouth, which came into Friday's matchup ranked third in the country in goals per game, challenged the Dragons early and often, but goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist seemed up to the task, stopping the first five shots that came her way in the opening 28 minutes. The Hawks would break through at 29:42 in the first half as Mallory Kusakavitch deflected Julie Laszlo's feed off the corner to put Monmouth up 1-0. The score would remain close at 1-0 heading into the half, despite the Dragons' inability to register a shot on goal.
The Hawks again charged out of the gates in the second half, and found the back of the cage less than four minutes in. Hanna Kelly notched her first of the day off the feed from Laszlo on the corner. The Dragons worked their first scoring opportunity of the day in the 43rd minute, as Chandler McFeeley fired a shot on goal off the penalty corner, but Monmouth keeper Christen Piersanti was there to make the stop. Less than seven minutes later, the Dragons broke through as Cornelissen, the freshman from the Netherlands, notched the first goal of her career. Five minutes later, though, Monmouth would answer on Kusakavitch's second of the day to extend the lead back to two. Kelly would then add her second of the day and sixth of the season in the 68th minute to seal a 4-1 win for the Hawks.
Monmouth outshot Drexel 24-5 overall and 13-2 in shots on goal. Gilchrist made nine stops for the Dragons, while Christen Piersanti stopped one of the two shots with which she was challenged. Monmouth had four penalty corners to Drexel's two.
Drexel returns to action Sunday at noon when it hosts Bucknell at Buckley Field.
