Men's Soccer Falters in OT Against Delaware, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA - The final Colonial Athletic Association home game of the year for the Drexel men's soccer team did not go as planned for the Dragons, who fell to Delaware in overtime on Wednesday night, 2-1. Drexel held an early lead, but waws outshot 19-2 overall on the evening and could not come up with three crucial league points.
Chris Donovan scored for the Dragons just 45 seconds into the game. Stephen Kopsachilis took a goalie kick that sailed to midfield, where Kwesi Allen flicked it over to a speeding Chris Donovan. Donovan easily outraced his defender to the ball, then had just Delaware keeper Todd Morton to beat. He tapped a low shot to the right post that eluded Morton's grasp and put the Dragons on top, 1-0.
Kopsachilis' point was the first for a Drexel goalkeeper since Tim Washam had an assist as part of a 2-0 victory over James Madison on Nov. 2, 2012.
Despite the hot start, Drexel could not get much going offensively in the first half. The Blue Hens outshot them 10-1, and found an equalizer in the 37th minute. The Dragons were called for a hand ball in the box, setting up a Fede Prieto penalty kick attempt. His ball ricocheted off the left post, but caromed right back to him. With Kopsachilis out of position after the dive towards the PK, Prieto was able to easily tap it home on the second attempt.
Things remained much the same throughout the second half, with the Dragons managing just one shot, a Mathias Ebbesen look that Morton was able to haul in for his lone save of the evening. Delaware took nine second-half shots, but none were particularly tricky as Kopsachilis had two of his five saves in the second 45:00.
Finally in overtime, the Blue Hens' possession dominance allowed them to break through. John Schroeder raced in and got behind the defense on the right side of the box, where he took in a pass and dribbled in towards the goal. Feeding it across the goalmouth, he found Jake Steinberg in close on the left side, where the freshman finished his first career score to provide the winner.
Drexel will now look for the points it needs to remain in playoff position on the road. The Dragons head to Northeastern on Saturday evening for a 5 p.m. matchup with the Huskies, who currently sit three points clear of them. They will also play a road match at William & Mary, who came into Wednesday's action two points behind the Dragons, on Oct. 20. Drexel's remaining home games are both non-conference matchups with Princeton on Oct. 16 and Saint Joseph's on Oct. 24.
