Women's Soccer Defeats Northeastern, 1-0
10/18/2018 8:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Lauren Currey scored her fourth goal of the season and junior Libby Baeza made nine saves in goal as the Drexel women's soccer team upset Colonial Athletic Association Northeastern, 1-0, on Thursday evening at Parsons Field. The loss gives Northeastern, who currently sits at first place in the conference, their second conference loss of the season.
Drexel started the match off strong earning a corner kick and two shots from Shea Tomlinson and Morgan Rees just over five minutes after the starting whistle blew. Northeastern retaliated with offensive pressure of their own, getting four shots off before the Dragons were able to pull ahead with a goal in the 32nd minute thanks to Drexel's freshmen duo. Currey intercepted a pass in the midfield before feeding the ball into Morgan Rees for a give-and-go to get the ball back at her foot. Once Currey collected the wall pass, she fired her shot into the back of the net past Northeastern's keeper Nathalie Nidetch for her fourth goal of the season. Baeza then made two saves, including one with less than three minutes remaining, to keep the Dragons ahead 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Huskies came out of the recess looking for revenge, getting shots off early at the start of the second half. Baeza and the Drexel defense, however, were up to the challenge as they were able to fend off every opportunity Northeastern attempted. In the span of just three minutes, Baeza made three crucial saves to keep Drexel's advantage alive as Northeastern continued to rattle off shots. Northeastern had one more opportunity before the final whistle but Baeza was there, as she had been all game, to make the save and give the Huskies their second conference loss of the season.
Drexel will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when it hosts Elon for its senior day at Vidas Field. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
