PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's soccer Kiera Hennessy and Lauren Currey scored with assists from Emma Heckenberg to power the Drexel women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Colonial Athletic Association opponent Elon on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field. With the win, the Dragons will advance to postseason play in the CAA tournament beginning on Friday, Oct. 26.
The first five minutes were mainly fought within the midfield until Elon got the first shot of the game off with Drexel keeper Libby Baeza making the save. Drexel later found two opportunities from Heckenberg and Currey, but both attempts were unsuccessful. Following shots from Rachel Sharkey and Rory Klingensmith, Hennessy found the end of Heckenberg's corner kick for her fourth goal of the season and the 1-0 advantage. Hennessy's goal was her third that she's scored with her head off of a Heckenberg corner this season. The Dragons outshot the Phoenix 6-3 in the first half with shots from six different players.
Klingensmith opened the half for the Dragons getting the first shot off less than five minutes after the second half whistle. One of Drexel's strongest opportunities came with 20 minutes remaining in the half when Raenah Campbell flicked on a cross to the bottom left corner of the net, earning a corner kick after a save by Elon's keeper Valentina Estrada. Following the play, Drexel later earned two back-to-back corners that resulted in two headers from Hennessy and Maggie Daeche, just nearly missing the net for the Dragons' second goal. The Dragons' second goal, however, came moments later in the 80th minute when Currey flicked on a free kick from Heckenberg into the upper left corner of the net. The goal was Currey's fifth of the season and Heckenberg's second assist of the game.
The Dragons outshot the Phoenix, 19-5, while Baeza made four saves in net for Drexel.
Drexel will return to action for the CAA conference tournament beginning on Friday, Oct. 26. Opponent and location will be determined at a later date.
