Women’s Soccer Set to Face Charleston in CAA Quarterfinals Friday

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 5 seeded Drexel women's soccer team is set to take on No. 4 Charleston in the CAA Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at James Madison. The Dragons and Cougars will square off beginning at 1 p.m. Drexel returns to the CAA Championships for its fifth appearance in program history.
STAT LEADERS
Senior Shaelyn McCarty leads the Dragons with 13 points on six goals and one assist this season. Freshman Lauren Currey and redshirt senior Kiera Hennessy follow closely behind with 10 and eight points, respectively. Currey scored in four of the last five matches, giving her five goals on the season. Hennessy, who has scored all of her goals off of headers this season, sits at third on the squad with four goals while senior Emma Heckenberg holds a team-leading four assists. Junior goalkeeper Libby Baeza has earned seven shutouts on the season and currently leads the conference with a .842 save percentage a .81 goals against average.
FINAL STANDINGS
The Dragons (7-6-5, 4-4-1 CAA) finished the 2018 season fifth in the conference. The Dragons tallied 13 points in conference play and ended the year behind Charleston, who earned the No. 4 seed after going 5-3-1 against CAA opponents.
CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
In the CAA's new tournament format, James Madison will host first round and semifinal matches on Friday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 28. The Dukes will face the winner of the match between Drexel and Charleston. On the opposite side of the bracket, Northeastern will host matches on Friday and Sunday, meeting the winner of the match between Hofstra and Delaware.
The highest remaining seed will host the CAA Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday, Nov. 3, with the winner earning the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.

The Cougars will be the No. 4 seed after suffering a close 1-0 loss on the road at Hofstra to close out the regular season. Leading the offense for the Cougars is Laura Ortega with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. Alyssa Beck has 12 points on four goals and four assists while three other cougars have notched three goals apiece. In goal for Charleston is Genevieve Henderson. She holds a 9-6-0 record while recording 49 saves.
THE SERIES VS. CHARLESTON
Friday's match marks the seventh meeting between the Dragons and the Cougars in women's soccer action, with Drexel leading the all-time series 5-1-0. The two teams met earlier this season when the Dragons defeated Charleston, 2-1, in double overtime. Goals were scored by Morgan Rees and McCarty while Baeza made four saves in net for the Dragons.
