Own Goal Leads to 3-2 Men's Soccer Win at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A wild game finished in the Dragons' favor on Tuesday evening as the Drexel men's soccer team hung on for a 3-2 win at Rutgers. Three of the game's five goals were scored in the first eight minutes of play, and the margin was decided by an own goal early in the second half.
Kwesi Allen and Chris Donovan helped Drexel (7-2-2) answer an early punch by the host Scarlet Knights as the Dragons trailed 1-0 in the third minute but led 2-1 five minutes later. Rutgers (2-7-1) got an equalizer in the 21st minute, but after the teams went into the locker rooms even, the Dragons got the break they needed in the 59th minute when the Scarlet Knights let in the own goal.
Before most fans had settled into their seats, Rutgers already was on the board. Just 2:39 into the action, Jordan Hall scored for the Scarlet Knights on a free kick from 19 yards out, his seventh of the season.
It was a tough blow for a Dragons team that was held without a goal in the first two games of this three-game road trip, but it seemed to wake the offense up. Just over two minutes later, it was Allen's turn to score on a free kick, this time from 25 yards out, straight on. His third of the year tied things up with just 4:44 elapsed.
The Dragons wasted no time breaking the deadlock. After just 7:11 of play, Michael McCarthy sent a pass into the box where Mathias Ebbesen headed it across to Donovan, who flicked it in from five yards out.
Rutgers tied things up in the 21st minute when Andrew Murray was fed by Miles Hackett, who sent a pass back into center after working the ball down low towards the baseline.
The score remained tied until the 59th minute, when a Rutgers defensive miscue put the Dragons on top. A pass was sent across the box in front of the Scarlet Knights' keeper. With pressure from the Drexel offensive front line, the ball was played by a Rutgers defender who redirected it the wrong way, past an unsuspecting keeper.
Rutgers could not get a shot on goal the rest of the way.
The Dragons will return home on Saturday when they host UNCW at 4 p.m. on Alumni Day. The game will be preceded by the team's annual alumni game, as well as a ceremony honoring the 1998 America East champions.
