PHILADELPHIA - No. 14 Saint Joseph's came out firing on all cylinders Friday night at Buckley Field, downing the Drexel field hockey team, 8-0. The Dragons fell to 5-6 (0-1 CAA) this year, while the nationally ranked Hawks improved to 9-2 (3-0 A10).
The Hawks got on the board early and never looked back. Two-time All-American Anna Willocks took a feed from Pepa Serrano just over three minutes in for the first goal. Then, just over nine and a half minutes later, St. Joe's talented freshman Tonya Botherway sped down the center of the field and dumped a pass off to the Emily Henry, who buried it from the right side. St. Joe's would then notch its third of the first half 69 seconds later it was Botherway on the scoring end as she took a feed from Jordan Olenginski. In the 22nd minute of the opening half, the Dragons had their best scoring chances of the night. Megan Wiest sent a shot on goal that was saved by Hawks keeper Victoria Kammerinke, then Wiest fielded the rebound, but sent the second shot wide. The Dragons retained possession, and Rebecca Weinstock sent one on goal that was turned away by Kammerinke before Avery Powell did the same and Drexel came away from the possession empty handed. Erin Gilchrist would turn away the only other shot on goal in the half.
St. Joe's wasted no time in the second, scoring less than seven minutes into the period. After Gilchrist turned away a Willocks shot off the penalty corner, Joely Helder corralled the rebound and knocked it into the back of the cage. Ten minutes later Willocks broke through for her second of the game, as she put away the Emily Henry pass from the left side. In the final 15 minutes, the Hawks turned on the jets, beginning with Botherway's second of the night as she broke free down the center of the field. Less than two minutes later, Johanna Huse scored on the penalty corner off a feed from Olenginski. Then, with less than five minutes left, Willocks completed her hat trick as she took a long pass from Courtney Gerber.
The Hawks outshot the Dragons 19-7, including 12-4 on goal. Saint Joseph's had four penalty corner chances. Gilchrist made three saves in goal before Kathryn Boyce took over with 10:23 remaining. Delaney Baxendale made a defensive save on an Emily Peters shot nearing the halfway point of the second half.
The Dragons return to action Sunday afternoon as the continue their five-game homestand against James Madison at noon. The game will also be the team's annual Play 4 the Cure game.
