MACON, Ga. – Mercer pitcher Megan Bilgri tossed a five-inning perfect game as the Drexel softball team dropped a 9-0 decision Friday afternoon on Sikes Field at the Black and Orange Challenge in Macon, Ga. The Dragons fell, 8-6, to Eastern Kentucky to open the season earlier in the day.
The Bears got on the board quick with a two-run home run off the bat of catcher Megan Lane following a Laurenne Sanchez double in the bottom of the first inning. In the third, the Bears again followed a double with a homer. Lane started it off with a two-out two-bagger to get to cleanup hitter Quirisa Mauga, who drilled a two-run shot to give Mercer a 4-0 lead. With Bilgri cruising, the Bears finished off the Dragons with a five-run bottom of the fourth. After a walk and a double to put two on, the designated hitter Allie Jones knocked one in with a single before Meghan Rud reached on an error that scored another two. Following another walk and a wild pitch to advance the runners, Lane plated a run with a sacrifice fly to left before Mauga singled home the fifth run of the inning and the ninth of the game for Mercer.
Devon Grippe took the loss for the Dragons. She went 3 1/3 innings and gave up six earned on eight hits and a walk. Christina Toven pitched the final 2/3 of an inning.
Drexel continues play at the Black and Orange Challenge Saturday morning with a 9:30 a.m. start against Radford before an 11:45 a.m. first pitch against Akron. The Dragons close out their time in Georgia Sunday morning against Akron at 11 a.m.
